Summary:
|
First, a bit about the author Bob Cullen. Cullen collaborated
with Bob Rotella on four of his best selling golf books including,
Golf is Not a Game of Perfect. He lives with his wife and children
in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
"
Why Golf?" is a wonderfully put together book by Bob Cullen
which talks to how the game of golf is grounded in human nature.
Cullen does this by first looking at the life of Arnold Haultian,
the author of "The Mystery of Golf" written in 1908.
He then compares the game of golf to works of Plato, John Calvin
and even Jane Goodall's classic, "In the Shadow of Man",
a study of chimpanzee's and how their lives somewhat reflect
that of man. "Why Golf?" also has some great chapters
about Bob Rotella, Golf Course Architect Tom Doak, Swing Mechanics,
Tiger Woods, David Oakley (a Senior Tour hopeful), Jack Fleck
and Ken Venturi. Cullen also takes you on golfing journeys to
Iran and Scotland as well as the Groundhog Cup he plays in annually
at Innisbrook in Tampa Florida. Looking at the chapters mentioned
above, you wonder how they can be tied together but Cullen has
done so superbly. Not only is each chapter filled with unforgettable
quotes but the reader is taught even more about the mental aspects
of golf . Cullen has also weaved into the book some revealing
looks at Fleck and Venturi's US Open victories and why they
occurred. I enjoyed that chapter immensely and learned things
about both men I never knew. I finished the book over the Christmas
holiday's while it was 30 degrees outside. It's books like these
that make you forget about the weather because it's so good
you almost feel like you're on the journey with the writer.
It is not only very entertaining, it's also very instructional
in a lot of ways. You learn all kinds of things you can apply
to your own game. A definite must read!!
