Summary:

One Magical Sunday (But Winning Isn't Everything) is a fantastic book which depicts Phil Mickelson's Sunday round last year at Augusta. The book is written in a unique way with 18 chapters, for each hole Mickelson played that day, and each chapter starts out with his thoughts on the hole as well as how the round had been going to that point.  It really takes the reader inside his mindset throughout the day. Each chapter finishes with how he completed that particular hole at Augusta National. We found this approach to be a great learning tool highlighting Mickelson’s course management strategy.

The book depicts Phil's life starting at birth and going through some of his early days, junior golf, collegiately, and into his professional career with great quotes from his wife, mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister, brother, Rick Smith, Dave Pelz, Steve Loy, Jim MacKay, Chris Dimarco and Ernie Els.

One Magical Sunday isn't all about golf though. For the first time, he openly talks about the problems that occurred when his wife Amy gave birth to their third child, Evan. The story is gut wrenching yet heart warming all at the same time. He also details some of the parenting practices he's had to go through with his two daughters. His daughter Amanda is exactly like he was as a child, very strong willed. He talks very openly about his life partner, Amy, and how they met. He also talks about the yearly practice of surprising each other for their anniversary (Phil takes the even years, Amy the odd) with wonderful trips planned and how they go out on a date one night a week as well.

I was actually a part of that magical Sunday which is one of the reasons I bought the book.  I was sitting in the bleachers by the 14th tee but could see off in the distance the 12th green as well as the play at hole 13. As Mickelson headed to 13th green, his dad actually came up into the stands and sat just in front of me. After he birdied the 13th hole and had teed off on the 14th, we started down the stairs. I told his dad, "You sure did a great job of raising your son. They don't come any better than him on or off the course". Mr. Mickelson replied, "Thank you. You know his brother Tim and sister Tina are just like him." I walked away just amazed at the fact his son was enroute to win his first major and he was talking about all of his three kids in the same breath. No question, Mr. Mickelson deserves much of the credit for who Phil Mickelson is.
