Target Audience: The golf enthusiast or anyone who enjoys a good fiction work in the style of John Grisham.

Summary:

First a bit about the author, J. Michael Veron. Veron lives in Lake Charles, Louisiana where between novels he works as a trial lawyer, plays golf and follows the Green Wave of Tulane. He is a USGA Committe member and has served as a Rules Official in USGA competitions.

The Greatest Player Who Never Lived is a work of fiction but much of the history and accomplishments given about former players is accurate. In the book, Charley Hunter goes to work as a summer intern at Butler and Yates, a prestigious law firm in Atlanta. One of his first duties is to catalog legal files that belonged to the famed Bobby Jones who had once been a partner with the firm. In the files he finds some personal letters from Jones to a man by the name of Beauregard Stedman that were a bit unnerving. In more research, Hunter finds out that Stedman had been accused of murder and while fleeing the law, was writing back and forth to Jones. Hunter wonders why a man with the reputation of Jones would try to help an accused murderer and flaunt the law in the process so he continues to dig. What he finds out is that Stedman truly was the greatest player who lived but was not able to prove it to anyone given his circumstances therefore no record exists on the man. A wonderfully told story in the flavor of John Grishams early works. Highly recommend!
