About Ed Mitchell
PGA Golf Professional - Life Member/Quarter Century
Founder/Chairman, Mitchell Golf Equipment Company

Ed started his golf career as an eleven-year-old caddy at The Country Club of Jackson, Michigan. At the age of 14 he was selected the “Best Caddy of the Year” and was asked by the head golf professional Chuck Smith to work the following year in the bag room where he first learned club repair techniques. Ed was promoted to pro shop manager two years later. In April 1962 he turned pro and served the membership at The Country Club of Jackson as an assistant golf professional until 1970. During this time, he served 5 years as a PGA apprentice, and was elected to PGA membership in May 1967. As a PGA Member for 37 years, he is currently a Life Member and became a Quarter Century member in 1992.

Ed served as head golf professional at Clio Country Club, Clio, Michigan & Shenandoah Golf & Country Club, West Bloomfield, Michigan. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in November 1974 to assume the duties of Director of Golf at Sabal Palms Golf Club. A year later Ed assumed the same position at Bonaventure Country Club, where he hosted the Country Club of America Pro Am Championship, which was the brain trust of noted author and golf writer Oscar Fraley. During his distinguished career as a club professional, Ed served the PGA in many ways. He has been a business school instructor, an instructor at the PGA Junior Golf Academy, an officer of the South Florida PGA section, President of the South Florida Chapter, rules official at the 1972 PGA Championship played at Oakland Hills Country Club, and the 41st PGA Senior Championship. Ed was also a certified PGA-USGA Rules expert. His fellow South Florida golf professionals chose him as chapter “Golf Professional of the Year” in 1979, and as the 1980 “Resort Merchandiser of the Year” for the South Florida PGA Section.

In 1986 Ed started and operated an indoor learning center in Centerville, Ohio. He offered golf instructions and club repair services. It quickly became evident to him that the industry lacked professional club repair equipment and tools that was badly needed in his new operation. So he decided to develop at loft & lie machine. His first STEELCLUB® Angle Machine debuted at the inaugural PGA Teaching Summit in Dallas, Texas in November 1988. That was the beginning of Mitchell® Golf Equipment Company, which has become known as the worldwide leader for professional club repair tools. Because of the success of Mitchell® Golf Equipment Company, Ed closed the learning center in 1996 to concentrate full time on developing the innovative tools his company offers today.
