Titleist DCI Irons

The following is a chronological history of the Titleist DCI family of irons. DCI stands for Direct Central Impact. They were first introduced in the 1990-1991 timeframe. All irons in the DCI family are cast from 431 stainless steel.
Year Description
1991-1995 First DCI Gold, gold delta (or triangle), moderate progressive offset.
1992- Original DCI Black, black delta meaning less offset although it was still progressive.
1994-1999 DCI-B, the "B" stands for blade, minimal constant offset, center of gravity is biased higher on the clubface and closer to the heel, in the same place as with a forged muscleback blade. Available as custom order only.
1995- Next in the DCI line came the DCI Oversize models featuring Senior, Lady Oversize, and an even larger Oversize Plus (+). The Oversize+ first came in the more offset Gold version and was followed by Black and "B" versions. The Oversize+ Black is still available as custom order only.
1996 DCI 96, the replacement model for the original DCI-Black. Intent was to make this iron feel more like a muscleback iron and to this end, more weight was placed in the heel and bottom of club. Features thinner topline than the DCI Black. Also featured a taller heel profile and less offset. First time for a DCI iron to have the Triple Grind Sole with centrally located crescent-shaped bounce surfaces intended to provide more stability through impact and enabling the club to be more versatile from a various lies. Stand shaft was the Tri-Spec sttel and graphite.
1997-1999 DCI 962 Update to the DCI 96 with the follwing changes: standard shafts changing from Tri-Spec to Dynamic Gold, grooves from "u" to "v", and addition of the 962 stamping.
1997- DCI 962B, minimal offset, custom only, featuring a "weight shelf" in the cavity for the first time.
1998- Next, the DCI 981 and its 'Strong Loft' companion, the 981SL were introduced. Both have Gold deltas, again indicating more progressive offset than the 962 with the SL having more between the two 981s. Both feature progressive weight shelves within the cavity to adjust the weight distribution on a club by club basis.
1999- DCI 990, next generation cast perimeter-weighted club like all previous models in the DCI family. Started showing up in the bags of PGA Tour professionals in early spring 1999.
