MacGregor V-FOIL M455

MacGregor V-FOIL M455 irons 3-PW, 5-iron 38" length, MacGregor 95-gram Micro-Step steel shaft in regular flex, and MacGregor grip.

Manufacturer's Description
The V-FOIL M455 from MacGregor Golf irons feature an extremely deep, low center of gravity that helps get the ball airborne quickly. The large effective hitting area helps deliver greater forgiveness. The face thickness and composition of the club heads transitions from long irons to short irons. From #3-iron to #6-iron, the face is forged from a very thin maraging 455 stainless steel for maximum forgiveness and hot ball response. From #7-iron to pitching wedge, the club heads are forged from 1045 soft carbon steel for increased feel and distance control. Each iron is forged hosel through the toe, with the V-FOIL weighting welded on the back. The irons are finished with a three-step process of copper/nickel/chrome plating for unmatched elegance and durability. Suggested retail price is $699.99 (steel) and $799.99 (graphite).

MacGregor V-FOIL M455 Review:

Accuracy

Less-Avg-More

We found the V-FOIL M455 irons to be average in the accuracy category. The irons were very easy to hit and generally just wanted to go straight. One reviewer found that, at times, squaring the clubhead at impact was a little difficult due to the large size of the head design. Overall, they were as accurate as our current sets.
Distance

Short-Avg-Long

The distance of the V-FOIL M455 irons were found to be longer than our current sets, particularly in the long irons. The 3 and 4 irons are easy to hit and resemble a hybrid iron wood that, at address, provide the needed confidence required to produce good long iron shots.
Trajectory

Low-Avg-High

The trajectory of these irons was higher than our current sets but distance was not sacrificed due to the higher flight. Because of the larger mass in the sole of the club, we found it easy to get the ball airborne throughout the set and the trajectory produced was very manageable.
Feel

Less-Avg-More

This is where the V-FOIL M455 irons really shined. We typically don't talk about forgings and game improvement in the same breath but the V-FOIL M455 irons are just that. The irons feel very solid and produce a feel that MacGregor forgings are known for.

Forgiveness

Less-Avg-More

We found these irons to be above average in forgiveness. While more forgiving than our current "players" irons, the forgiveness was not significantly greater than other game improvement irons on the market. The irons did seem to have a larger than normal sweet spot although extreme toe and heel shots produced typical distance loss.

Looks
The V-FOIL M455 irons have a large and muscular look to them. The wide sole and protruding flange make them look 100 percent game improvement. The mirror finish and traditional MacGregor script, however, may make them appeal to better golfers.

Summary:
The V-FOIL M455 irons from MacGregor Golf receive high marks for feel, looks, and distance. The look is game improvement but the feel is one that is associated with MacGregor’s traditional forgings. We feel that these clubs will appeal to mid and high handicap golfers that are interested in getting forged feel from a solid game improvement iron. We also think that low handicap golfers may be interested in using the M455 long irons as replacements for their hard to hit 2 and 3 irons.
