2002 Expo Report
The 2002 PGA Fall Expo was held August 2-3, 2002 at the Reno Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. This was my first time to cover the Expo and upon arrival was immediately impressed by the down-scaled setting and laid back environment. The Expo offered exhibits at the convention center and hands-on product demonstrations at two local golf courses on both days. There were approximately 315 exhibitors in attendance for this show that was pre-empted last year by the September 11th attacks. While significantly less fanfare and attendance than the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, there were still some exciting new product introductions. At the top of the equipment list had to be Nike's introduction of their first fairway woods, steel drivers, golf bags, golf ball, and junior equipment. Look for Nike's newest iron, the Pro Combo, to be announced within the week. Feel Golf introduced the new Dr. Feel drivers while Tour Edge and Srixon unveiled their latest high-COR drivers. Dunlop had a strong showing with their new additions to the Tad Moore line of equipment. Two new putter companies to look for are Mirip Tech with their Finale line and catchy Bird dog putters. Several new high tech bold golf bags were presented by OGIO and Physics Golf Concepts. Topping the apparel list was the new collections on display by the Ben Hogan Apparel Group. A mixed reaction was provided by exhibitors when asked about the Expo's success. Some indicated that they did not have too much traffic while others were extremely pleased with their results. The Expo heads to San Diego, California for the next two years where I am sure we will see the industry continue to gather and the PGA Fall Expo continue to form its new identity.
